The Clinical Trials Office (CTO) in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Utah School of Medicine has an immediate opening for a Billing Specialist. The Billing Specialist is responsible for aiding financial and operations staff in preparing study budgets, billing for services, and reviewing and resolving study-related billing errors and account issues.

WORK SCHEDULE: Full-time, 40 hours per week, MondayFriday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.



  • Assist with clinical research budget preparation process, which includes review and understanding of clinical study protocols, communicating with clinical teams to determine appropriate billable study procedures, putting together protocol billing grids, requesting procedural and other pricing, and preparing a study budget shell.
  • Process billing charges for all lines of services for the Clinical Trials Office and provide customer service to clinical research teams by answering questions and investigating and resolving billing queries and errors.
  • Review and understand budgetary section of clinical trial agreements and identify appropriate procedural and other invoiceable items. Report this information in a timely manner to supervisor to ensure appropriate invoicing of study sponsors.
  • Regularly update budgeting and billing information in the central clinical trial database and update central procedural pricing ledger.
  • Update protocol billing grids in the uTRAC system.
  • Review billing processes and analyze billing error trends, report on findings, and issue recommendations for improvement.
  • Request Primary Children's Hospital institutional account setup when applicable.
  • Other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS: Three years medical billing experience and one year of coding experience using ICD-9-CM or equivalency required. Thorough knowledge of entire billing process, demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.



  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with uTRAC, EPIC, PeopleSoft and other University of Utah systems
  • Bachelor's degree in healthcare, business or other related field
  • Experience working in a clinical research setting
